ABOUT MARY:

Mary was a distant descendant of King David. She was probably in her early teens when she became engaged. An angel appeared to her and told her that she was going to miraculously have a baby who would be the savior of the world. Naturally, no one believed this story. Her fiancee could have had her executed for adultery, but instead decided to break off the engagement (which would have stigmatized her as "divorced"). Before he could do so, however, he was visited by the same angel and persuaded that the miracle was real.

The doctrine of the virgin birth is essential to Christianity, which hinges on the personhood of Christ. For this reason, the Roman Catholic church teaches that Mary remained a virgin her whole life as "proof" that Jesus was no ordinary human being. Ex-pagan Christians missing their goddesses may have contributed to the veneration of Mary's "perpetual virginity."

When Protestants came around in the 16th century, they upheld the doctrine of the virgin birth but opposed any teaching that she remained a virgin forever, as there is no biblical basis for it. The Catholic church saw this as an attack on the personhood of Christ. The Spanish Empire fought back by making it illegal to depict Mary unless she was blonde with blue eyes (symbols of her purity). The Virgin of Guadalupe, Mary's depiction as a Mexican woman, was a political revolt, Mexico's way of saying that they did not need to go through Spain in order to reach God.

Out of respect for Mary's ethnicity, I've attempted to depict her with brown eyes and brown skin (though the latter is difficult to paint as luminous).

I really like this series. The theme is interesting and allow you to explore some cultural background.
And you are impressively good at rendering stain glasses (I learnt the word thanks to a comment above :) ), not to mention your lights!

However on most pictures in this series, I also find the same thing that bothers me: while the background is wonderfully rendered, the main character seems to lack definition in comparison.
In this case, the dress of the character is great but her face has a more comics vibe that doesn't really blend. I would like to see the upper portion of the character more detailed. *

Don't get me wrong, this is great. I just feel like it could be taken even further!

Thank you so much for the constructive criticism!! I really appreciate it. I definitely have something of a comic book style, and I'm learning to take more time with details and whatnot. Thanks for pointing it out!

Well I always try to go beyond the "wow that's great" usual comment if I write something to you. The downside is that it can take months before I actually comment.
That being said, a comics style is great. The only thing that bothers me here is the difference between the glass and the character.

You do beautiful sketchings of stain glass. I have attempted at it once, but it was not as amazing as what you can do.

God bless you! ^^

Don't give up! My first attempts at stained glass weren't great, and these could be improved upon, too. Just keep drawing!

I seriously don't understand why nobody considers the possibility that Mary had lost her virginity at some point after jesus's birth. I mean, she was married after all.  And the only reason we call her "the virgin" is because her significance is the fact that she's Jesu's mother.  besides, it clearly mentions that Jesus had siblings.

Catholics feel it was necessary that Mary remain a virgin so that, throughout her lifetime, people could know that Jesus was born of a virgin. So they say that even though Mary and Joseph were married, they didn't "come together" and all of Jesus' siblings were adopted. (Even though that's a more complicated interpretation of the text that has no biblical support.) But I mean... was she inviting people to inspect her hymen? Probably not?

Catholicism has a somewhat off-putting obsession with virgins.

Actually, I remember hearing ap rogram on the history channel that one woman had t actually stick her finger up Mary to make sure she was a virgin, and much to Joseph's relief, she was.

Its so beautiful and peaceful! Great job!
Also thanks for the brief history lesson. I always thought Mary was depicted with blonde hair and blue eyes because they are common traits in northern Europe.
